Anurag Kashyap has made a decisive move, confirming his departure from Bollywood and Mumbai. In a candid interview, the acclaimed filmmaker revealed his disillusionment with the current state of the industry, citing a "toxic" atmosphere and an obsession with chasing blockbuster figures.
"I've left Mumbai," Kashyap stated, expressing his desire to distance himself from the film fraternity. He lamented the loss of creative freedom, highlighting the industry's singular focus on achieving astronomical box office numbers, like the elusive ₹500 crore mark.
His sentiments echo previous statements where he expressed "disgust" with Bollywood and admiration for the South Indian film industry's experimental spirit. Kashyap feels producers are now overly concerned with profit margins, stifling creative risks and turning filmmaking into a mere sales exercise. He plans to physically relocate from Mumbai next year.
Despite his departure, Kashyap remains active in the film world. He's currently promoting the Hindi release of the Malayalam film "Footage," which he is presenting. Additionally, he's set to play a police officer in the bilingual film "Dacoit," starring Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur.
Kashyap's exit underscores a growing concern among filmmakers about the industry's shift towards formulaic blockbusters, potentially signaling a significant change in the landscape of Indian cinema.
