Veteran Actor Kota Srinivasa Rao Passes Away at 83; Industry Mourns Loss of a Multifaceted Genius

The Telugu film industry, and indeed Indian cinema at large, is deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Kota Srinivasa Rao, who breathed his last in the early hours of Sunday, July 13, at his residence in Hyderabad. He was 83 and had been battling age-related health complications. His demise, just three days after his 83rd birthday, marks the end of an illustrious era in Indian cinema.

A Legacy of Versatility and Impactful Performances

Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kota Srinivasa Rao's cinematic journey began in 1978 with the Telugu film Pranam Khareedu, a film that also marked the debut of Megastar Chiranjeevi. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Rao appeared in over 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. He was widely admired for his unparalleled versatility, distinctive voice modulation, and impactful performances, effortlessly transitioning between villainous, comedic, and character roles.

His remarkable talent earned him numerous accolades, including nine Nandi Awards from the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2015 for his immense contribution to Indian cinema. Beyond his acting prowess, Rao also served as an MLA from Vijayawada East in Andhra Pradesh from 1999 to 2004, showcasing his commitment to public service.

Industry Stalwarts Pay Heartfelt Tributes

The news of his passing has led to an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the film fraternity and political landscape.

Megastar Chiranjeevi, a long-time collaborator and contemporary, expressed profound sorrow: "Legendary actor, multifaceted genius Sri Kota Srinivasa Rao is no more, a news that has deeply saddened us. With the film Pranam Khareedu, he and I began our cinema careers at the same time. Thereafter, he acted in hundreds of films, portraying countless diverse roles, captivating Telugu audiences with his unique and distinctive style, and securing a permanent place in their hearts. Be it a comedic villain, a serious villain, or a supporting character—every role he played was performed with such brilliance that it felt only he could do it justice. Recently, the personal tragedy in his family deeply affected him mentally. The void left by an actor like Sri Kota Srinivasa Rao is one that the film industry and cinephiles will never overcome. Praying for peace to his soul, I express my profound condolences to his family members, well-wishers, and fans."

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also expressed his deep sorrow, highlighting Rao's unique contributions: "I pray to God that his soul may rest in peace. Kota Srinivasa Rao's dialogue delivery and gestures captivated audiences." Kalyan reminisced about their family's long-standing friendship with Rao and their shared screen time in several notable films, including Akkada Ammaye Ikkada Abbayi, Gokulamlo Sita, Gudumba Shankar, Attarintiki Daredi, and Gabbar Singh.

Superstar Mahesh Babu penned an emotional message on social media: "Saddened to hear about the passing of Kota Srinivasa Rao garu... This loss feels personal to all of us who grew up watching and learning from him. May his soul rest in peace. Sending strength and prayers to his family."

Renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli mourned the loss, calling him "a master of his craft, a legend who breathed life into every character he portrayed. His presence on screen was truly irreplaceable." Other prominent personalities like Mohan Babu, Ravi Teja, Vishnu Manchu, Genelia D'Souza, Prakash Raj, Venkatesh Daggubati, and Rana Daggubati, along with Chief Ministers and political leaders, also paid their heartfelt respects, underscoring the immense impact Kota Srinivasa Rao had on the lives and careers of many.

His funeral was held in Hyderabad, with numerous celebrities and fans gathering to bid farewell to the legendary actor. Kota Srinivasa Rao's legacy of powerful performances and remarkable versatility will continue to inspire generations of artists and remain etched in the hearts of cinema lovers.
