The upcoming film "Gedela Raju," featuring Raghu Kunche in the titular role, is generating significant buzz with its gritty tagline, "Kakinada Taluka Cinema." Directed by Chaitanya Moturi and produced by Vani Ravikumar Moturi under the Moturi Talkies banner, the film is presented by Raghu Kunche himself. Following the success of its teaser and trailer, the movie is set for a grand theatrical release on April 24.
In a recent interview, Director Chaitanya Moturi shared insights into his journey and the highlights of this rustic murder mystery.
A Journey from Physiotherapy to Filmmaking
Hailing from Amalapuram, Chaitanya initially pursued a career in medicine to fulfill his family's wishes, even starting a physiotherapy clinic. However, his passion for literature and cinema led him to form a local short film club.
-
The Turning Point: His journey began when he impressed Dear Comrade director Bharat Kamma with stunning drone visuals of the Konaseema region. He subsequently worked as an Assistant Director on Dear Comrade and Ambajipeta Marriage Band.
-
Taking the Leap: After facing delays with outside producers, Chaitanya decided to helm his debut project independently with his father's support.
Casting Raghu Kunche as the Fierce 'Gedela Raju'
Initially planned as a small-budget film, the project’s scale grew as the script evolved. On the advice of directors Bharat Kamma and Dushyanth, Chaitanya sought a "noted artist" for the lead role.
-
Perfect Fit: After seeing his performance in Palasa 1978, Chaitanya felt Raghu Kunche was the ideal choice to play a rowdy sheeter. "His simplicity and realistic screen presence perfectly suited the character of Gedela Raju," the director noted.
Inspired by Real Crime and Ancient Philosophy
The story is a compilation of real-life incidents and rowdyism observed in the Kakinada and Amalapuram regions.
-
The 'Kanika-Neeti' Connection: Chaitanya introduced a unique philosophical angle inspired by the character Kanika from the Mahabharata. Kanika was a ruthless advisor to Dhritarashtra, believing in the ideology that one must strike down any obstacle without mercy. This "ruthless policy" is a core element of the protagonist's character.
-
Gedela Raju’s World: The film follows a rowdy sheeter who runs a dairy farm, blending raw crime with psychological depth.
Music and Realistic Presentation
Raghu Kunche pull double duty as the lead actor and the music composer.
-
Soulful BGM: The director highlighted the background score as a major asset, recorded in high-quality Dolby Atmos.
-
Unique Soundtrack: The film features three songs, including a satirical track played upon the protagonist's death, where women he deceived express their mixed feelings of anger and praise.
-
Hyper-Realism: To maintain authenticity, the team avoided "cinematic liberty." The costumes for the characters were sourced from second-hand markets to ensure they looked like real people from the neighborhood.
A Non-Linear Mystery
The film utilizes a non-linear screenplay, weaving five different subplots around the central character of Gedela Raju.
-
The Hook: With the caption "If you see it, there is one truth; if you don't, there are a hundred doubts," Chaitanya promises a mystery that will keep the audience guessing until the very end. He expressed confidence that the naturalistic performances and unpredictable twists will resonate with the viewers.
