Ahead of his birthday on June 2nd, acclaimed Telugu filmmaker Gunasekhar—the creative mind behind iconic cult blockbusters like Okkadu and Choodalani Vundi—interacted with the media to discuss his cinematic evolution. The veteran director opened up about the massive digital success of his new-age thriller Euphoria, his shift away from conventional mass formulas, and the current status of his long-shelved epic Hiranyakashyapa.

Euphoria Infuses New Creative Energy

Despite facing initial marketing hurdles during its theatrical campaign, Euphoria has emerged as a massive digital blockbuster, capturing the top trends across regional OTT platforms.

  • The Digital Boom: The raw, realistic thriller is currently receiving rave analytical reviews and heavy viewership on ETV Win and aha, alongside holding a top-trending spot on a rental basis on Amazon.

  • Linguistic Expansion: Acknowledge the strong universal appeal of the concept, the director revealed that the Tamil dub is finalized, and both Tamil and Hindi versions will officially roll out on OTT platforms soon to capture a pan-India audience.

Gunasekhar’s Take on Star Culture

"We desperately need to stop writing stories tailored around a hero's availability or pre-existing image. First, bake the narrative block, and then find the right actor who fits into that puzzle. When we build scenes just to accommodate heroism, we get trapped in repetitive formulas. I wrote Okkadu purely as a story first, which is why it seamlessly elevated Mahesh Babu. If I had reverse-engineered it to fit his stardom back then, it would have easily derailed into something like Sainikudu."

The Truth Behind Hiranyakashyapa and Trivikram

Setting the record straight regarding his highly anticipated mythological venture Hiranyakashyapa, Gunasekhar clarified the project's modern status.

The Corporate Bottleneck: Initially envisioned on a grand scale alongside Rana Daggubati and Fox Star Studios, the project hit a standstill following the global pandemic and Disney's corporate acquisition of Fox. The revamped executive team was hesitant to greenlight the massive ₹300 crore budget. Subsequently, the timeless mythological concept found grand pan-India expression through the blockbuster animated epic Mahavatar Narasimha.

Addressing the rumors linking star director Trivikram Srinivas to the script, Gunasekhar explained that Trivikram had initially offered to pen the dialogues out of mutual creative respect. Following subsequent project announcements from Rana's camp, a direct personal conversation between both filmmakers cleared up visual and conceptual anxieties, ensuring total transparency moving forward.

Future Production Layout

Vowing never to waste time on lengthy pre-production delays like the eight-year gap after Rudhramadevi, Gunasekhar announced that he has locked four complete bound scripts.

Stepping back from solo production duties to avoid marketing pitfalls, one of these highly anticipated projects will be spearheaded by his Gen-Z daughters as producers in collaboration with an outside director, while he pitches a hard-hitting, songless draft directly to leading stars and premier production houses.
