"A Home Intruder Brings Real Fear": Director Shree Tej S.K. on Award-Winning Thriller ‘Mayookha’

With audiences consuming world-class mystery web series and international cinema on OTT platforms every day, pulling off a theatrically engaging thriller requires bold visual storytelling and razor-sharp suspense. Director Shree Tej S.K. (formerly known as Srikanth Kandragula of Cinema Bandi Productions fame) aims to deliver exactly that with his directorial debut, ‘Mayookha’.

Starring Payal Chengappa in the titular role and produced by Sasidhar Nalla under the Prashvitha Entertai9ment banner, the film is gearing up for a worldwide theatrical release on October 9, 2026.

In an insightful pre-release interaction, Shree Tej broke down the film’s international festival run, its distinctive tone inspired by global cinema, and what sets this urban thriller apart.

Global Honors Before Theatrical Arrival

Before arriving on home turf, Mayookha made waves across international festival circuits, taking home the Best Mystery Movie and second place in the Thriller category at the New York Film Festival, alongside an official entry submission to the Cannes Film Festival.

"We never expected these global recognitions during production," Shree Tej revealed. "When the festival jury recognized our film, the energy within the team went through the roof. If you observe our teaser and promos, the framing, narrative pacing, and moody color grading carry distinct influences from Korean thrillers and Hollywood cinema. Today's viewers have high standards due to global OTT exposure. If we want them in theatres, we cannot cut corners—we must deliver fresh, uncompromising quality."

"Payal Chengappa Perfectly Embodies the Vulnerability of Mayookha"

Casting the right lead was vital for an intimate, character-driven mystery. The filmmaker explained how Payal stepped into the project:

"We initially narrated two concepts to senior actress Maheshwari garu (of Gulabi fame). While she loved both, she opted to collaborate with us on the other script. For Mayookha, we wanted an expressive performer whose fear and resilience felt grounded. Payal had earned acclaim in Kannada cinema and established a connect with Telugu audiences through web series. Her dedication to the character’s emotional isolation and distress is remarkable. The audience will travel right beside her through every harrowing twist."

Relatable Terror: Why ‘Mayookha’ Bypasses Routine Tropes

Clarifying the tone of the narrative, the director emphasized that the film is a taut psychological mystery rather than an ordinary supernatural jump-scare ride:

"If you walk into an eerie graveyard at night, your brain is already conditioned to expect ghosts. But true terror strikes when an unknown stranger suddenly invades the sanctuary of your own home—a space where you should feel safest.

Mayookha revolves around this chilling invasion: Who is this intruder entering the heroine's apartment? What does he want? How are their lives entangled? Across a brisk runtime of 2 hours and 10 minutes, the screenplay continuously unravels answers while keeping viewers guessing right until the climax."

What The Title Signifies

Decoding the film's title, Shree Tej reflected on its personal and symbolic meaning:

"Mayookha translates to 'a ray of hope'. By the time the closing credits roll, the audience will realize how essential that meaning is to the character's survival. Interestingly, the last short film I worked on two decades ago before moving to the US was also titled Mayookha. Around that period, Rajamouli garu adopted a daughter and named her Mayookha. That name remained etched in my mind, waiting for the right canvas to emerge."
He also praised composer Shibi Mathew Alex for weaving a tense, atmospheric soundscape that drives the emotional dread without over-amplifying scenes.

Rooted in Passion, Ready for the Future

Reflecting on his journey from the New York Film Academy to producing projects like Tantram and Sootravaakyam, Shree Tej stated that pushing cinematic boundaries will remain his core focus:

"Whenever a certain film becomes a box-office hit, the industry often rushes to copy the formula. But by the time a clone is produced, the audience's appetite has already moved on. I wanted my directorial debut to offer something genuinely distinctive. I admire the fearless narrative styles of Ram Gopal Varma, Upendra, Puri Jagannadh, and Jonathan Nolan.

My next film will be an emotional science-fiction drama designed as a clean, universal entertainer. But for now, we cannot wait for movie lovers to experience the mystery of Mayookha on the big screen this October 9."
