"Laughter with a Heartfelt Undercurrent": Director Badrappa Gajula Opens Up About ‘Crazy Kalyanam’ Ahead of Dasara Release

Gearing up for a festive holiday theatrical rollout on October 16, 2026, for Dasara, the team behind ‘Crazy Kalyanam’ is radiating confidence. Bankrolled by passionate producer Boosam Jagan Mohan Reddy under the Arrow Cinemas banner as their Production No. 2, the rooted comedy entertainer brings together an eclectic ensemble comprising VK Naresh, Anupama Parameswaran, filmmaker-actor Tharun Bhascker, and Akhil Uddemari (of Raju Weds Rambai fame).

With the final copy locked and post-production complete, debutant writer-director Badrappa Gajula shared insights into his creative origins, the real-life conflict that triggered the story, and why this family drama stands out during the festive season.

Advancing to Dasara: Final Copy Locked and Ready

Clarifying why the makers moved their theatrical date ahead from October 30 to October 16, Badrappa explained:

"The final cut of Crazy Kalyanam came out seamlessly and is completely ready. While our original eye was on late October to avoid festival clutter, the postponement of Venkatesh garu's Aadarsha Kutumbam opened up a wide theatrical window for wholesome family content. The primary shoot is wrapped up, and we are currently filming a fun promotional song.

Even though substantial releases arrive for Dasara, our film is an out-and-out family entertainer rooted in laughter and identifiable domestic warmth. While grounded in a vibrant Telangana setting, the dialect has been kept accessible and effortless for audiences across all Telugu regions."

Rooted in Storytelling: The Road to Direction

Badrappa’s filmmaking journey began not in traditional film sets as an apprentice, but in his ancestral village of Bandamailaram near Medchal:

"Storytelling runs in my blood. My great-grandfather narrated folk tales while strumming traditional instruments, and my grandfather and father regularly enacted characters in village Bhagavatham stage plays. Those bedtime retellings gave me an innate love for cinema.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and entered the visual space directly by helming over 200 government documentaries, ad films, and tourism features across rural belts. Experiencing the legendary Iranian film Children of Heaven was my turning point—it taught me that genuine cinema lives in everyday human experiences around us, not in artificially inflated conflicts."

A Story Born from Unspoken Realities

Decoding the core emotional premise of Crazy Kalyanam, Badrappa pointed out how societal double standards surrounding student marriages triggered the script:

"Growing up surrounded by strong women—my mother, grandmother, and sisters—I observed life closely from a woman's lens. Back in our college days, we frequently attended friends' weddings. It always struck me that while boys got to study and chase ambitions, girls with brilliant academic aspirations were married off early under the guise of family honor and custom. While classmates attended the event eating feasts and enjoying themselves, the girl had to surrender her future silently.

Crazy Kalyanam explores that precise emotional conflict, wrapped completely within clean, uproarious situational humor. When I approached Anupama garu, she connected with the core intent within minutes and came on board without hesitation."

Courtyard Nuptials, Tharun Bhascker’s Craft, and Poetic Melodies

The director shared what gives the film its distinctive atmosphere:

  • The Charm of Vakili Weddings: Rather than sterile air-conditioned function halls, major portions of the wedding were shot in the open courtyard in front of a traditional village home, reviving the warmth, banter, and nostalgia of authentic community celebrations.
  • Anupama’s Creative Input: Badrappa praised Anupama for actively improvising on set, offering subtle behavioral nuances on how a young woman processes family expectations.
  • Tharun Bhascker’s Full Surrender: Calling Tharun a creative powerhouse, the director noted that the actor completely surrendered to his role, exploring dramatic and comic textures effortlessly.
  • Lyrical Depth with Gorati Venkanna: Renowned folk poet and MLC Dr. Gorati Venkanna penned three original songs for the album, grounding the soundtrack in philosophical and cultural resonance.
With the backing of producer Boosam Jagan Mohan Reddy and major distribution hands, ‘Crazy Kalyanam’ looks primed to bring smiles and heart-touching moments to family audiences when it hits cinemas worldwide on October 16.
