“Kobbari Matta Is a Very Special Film in My Career”: Writer-Producer Sai Rajesh Announces Grand Theatrical Re-Release on November 14
Cult comedy classic ‘Kobbari Matta’—starring burning star Sampoornesh Babu and masterminded by writer-producer Sai Rajesh—is gearing up for a nostalgic theatrical comeback. Originally released on August 10, 2019, under the Amrutha Productions banner and presented by Vallamsetla Krishna Rao, the film won over audiences with its uproarious satire and legendary dialogues.
Ahead of its special re-release in limited theaters on November 14, the core team hosted an emotional and lively press meet in Hyderabad to relive their journey.
Sai Rajesh: “The Success of Kobbari Matta Taught Us the True Power of Cinema”
Reflecting on the grueling four-year struggle it took to bring the film to life, writer-producer Sai Rajesh shared how deeply tied the project is to his soul:
“Kobbari Matta is a very special film in my career. We went through immense financial hardships and hurdles during production. But the matinee and first shows on August 10, 2019, gave us the exact result we dreamed of, granting us the confidence and courage to keep making films. While the success of Baby and Chennai Love Story made me happy, the triumph of Kobbari Matta is unforgettable. Writing non-stop, two-to-three-minute dialogues for Sampu was a massive experiment, and watching those lines go viral on social media even today is surreal. For our Sampu, we are bringing the film back to theaters on the 14th so audiences can relive those laughs on the big screen.”
Sharing brief updates on his future ventures, Rajesh revealed that the Hindi remake of Baby will commence shooting in 15 to 20 days, followed by a brand-new Telugu directorial venture whose script is already locked.
Sampoornesh Babu and Ishika Singh Look Back at the Struggle
An emotional Sampoornesh Babu credited Sai Rajesh’s brilliant penmanship for making his characters immortal:
“Sai Rajesh anna made me play three distinct characters and delivered a massive 3-minute, 20-second non-stop monologue. Even today, fans call me just to quote those lines. We didn't even know if certain schedules would happen back then, but the audience's love wiped away all those tears. I request everyone to enjoy Kobbari Matta back in theaters on November 14.”
Leading lady Ishika Singh recalled the grueling uncertainty during production, noting that a senior actor once openly doubted if the film would ever see the light of day. She praised Sai Rajesh and Sampoornesh Babu for staying fiercely grounded and maintaining their unbreakable bond of friendship despite achieving massive cinematic success.
