The re-release of big-star movies is eating into the revenues of small movies, many of which are having to contend with deficit openings in the Telugu States.
What has happened this week at the box office is proof that re-releases have emerged as a bigger threat than even OTT. 'Mr. Pregnant' actor Syed Sohel Ryan is on record stating that the re-release of old hits is impacting small movies in highly unfavourale ways.
In recent months, several blockbusters have successfully eaten into the revenues of small and medium-range movies. In the coming weeks, films like Pawan Kalyan's 'Gudumba Shankar', Jr NTR's 'Rakhi', and 'Gabbar Singh', among others, are expected to subject new releases to new headaches.
Film bodies dominated by established players won't step in to resolve the issue in favour of everyone unless the revenues of their films get affected. If and when it happens, they might decree that re-releases must happen on weekdays and not on the days when fresh movies come out.
