Muslim body held a late-night meet after Modi's speech: Report

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hogged headlines when he made a speech referring to the Uniform Civil Code. UCC, as anybody with even a cursory understanding of BJP's ideology will tell you, is one of the core agenda items for the saffron party.

As per an NDTV report, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board held an emergency meeting Tuesday night hours after the PM's unexpected speech. Muslim bodies are expected to oppose the UCC, given that some Islamist features in Indian laws will stand abrogated once UCC is implemented.

There is this speculation that UCC will be announced on August 5. Nothing has been confirmed as yet.

The construction of Ram Mandir and the removal of Article 370 are the other two core ideological concerns of the BJP. They have already been achieved. The implementation of UCC is the only pending item thus far.

The move by Modi is expected to create social divisions if Muslim leaders mobilize the minority community. "We can expect protests across the country to become a major event. When CAA was introduced, anti-government rallies and speeches were witnessed across India. The BJP will benefit if Hindu consolidation results from anti-UCC protests by Muslims this time," an analyst wrote.
