Revanth Reddy serious about 'school fee loot'

As per media reports, the Directorate of School Education, Telangana, is looking into regulating school fees so that parents in the State get a breather. The steps to be taken will be based on the recommendations of the Acharya Tirupathi Rao Committee, which submitted its report many years ago. To be precise, in 2017.

"Private schools in Telangana are charging anywhere from Rs 12,000 to Rs 4 lakhs annually, with some increasing fees by up to 25% every year," a report by Sakshi observes.

In the media and civil society debates, the focus has been mainly on the private schools in Hyderabad. Many private schools across localities in the city have been accused of resorting to "loot". If the Tirupathi Rao Committee report were to have its way, the school fee hikes annually will go down from 25% to about 10%.

"There are private schools in the city that have deposits of more than Rs 30 crore," a report by The News Minute said in 2019. "One of the reasons that the ‘private school fee loot’ continues unabated is that most private schools are aware of the condition of government schools in the state," an education activist was quoted as saying in the report.
