"A Masterpiece of Reformation": DG of Prisons Saumya Mishra Applauds Award-Winning Film 23; Plans Screenings for Inmates

In a significant recognition of socially conscious cinema, the film 23 (Iravai Moodu), directed by the acclaimed Raj Rachakonda (Mallesham, Metro 8am), has been honoured with the prestigious Gaddar Special Jury Award. To celebrate this achievement, a special commendation event was held in Hyderabad, graced by the Director General of Prisons, Saumya Mishra.

A Cinematic Parallel to "The Shawshank Redemption"

Speaking at the event, DG Saumya Mishra lauded the film for its authentic portrayal of prison life and the complexities of prisoner reformation. She noted that the film handles a sensitive subject with immense responsibility.

"I have watched 23, and it is incredibly impactful. The way it explores the transformation of inmates is masterful. We haven't seen prison life depicted with such realism on screen before. In my view, 23 stands alongside global classics like The Shawshank Redemption. We will certainly arrange screenings of this film for prison inmates; even if it changes the heart of a few, it is a massive victory for the creators."

The Story Behind the Screen: The Chilakaluripeta Incident

The film is based on the tragic real-life Chilakaluripeta bus burning incident. Writer Bharadwaj explained that the movie focuses on the perpetrators' story, arguing that the crime was not premeditated. The film raises poignant questions about justice and mercy, highlighting that while many intentional offenders have been released over the years, those involved in this specific case remain behind bars.

Voices of Support

  • Director Raj Rachakonda: Expressed his gratitude to the Gaddar Awards Jury and urged the government to facilitate screenings in jails to fulfil the film's true purpose of reformation.

  • Legendary Director B. Narsing Rao: Welcomed the film, comparing its realistic approach to his own classics like Maabhoomi and Daasi. He emphasised that the government should actively encourage such cinema.

  • Dr. Beena Chintalapuri: A specialist in prison reform who has worked in Telangana and Tihar jails, she praised Raj’s persistence in integrating actual reform programmes into the narrative.

The event was attended by a distinguished panel including Dr. Siddoji Rao, actor Thagubothu Ramesh, and members of the legal fraternity, all of whom advocated for the rehabilitation of long-term prisoners.
