With Dynamic Star Vishnu Manchu's dream project 'Kannappa' set for its grand release on June 27th, director Mukesh Kumar Singh engaged with the media today, sharing compelling insights into the devotional epic. Produced by M. Mohan Babu under the banners of AVA Entertainment and 24 Frames Factory, 'Kannappa' has already built immense anticipation with its teasers, trailers, and songs. As the release date draws near, the film's team is intensifying its promotional efforts.

The Genesis of 'Kannappa': A Divine Connection

Mukesh Kumar Singh recounted how he came to direct the film: "The 'Mahabharat' series was a huge project, but I didn't direct all episodes myself; there were other directors too. One day, I received a call from Vishnu's team. I clarified that others also directed the series along with me. After that, I didn't get any calls for a long time."

He continued, "Later, Anup Singh Thakur, who worked with Vishnu in Achari America Yatra, spoke about me to Vishnu. That's how they approached me again. Vishnu asked me to come to Hyderabad. Once here, we discussed for about three to four hours. Until then, I wasn't very familiar with the story of Kannappa. After Vishnu narrated it, I began extensive research."

The final decision came from the veteran producer himself. "Mohan Babu Garu called me again. He spoke with me for an hour about the 'Mahabharat' series, and then we discussed this project as well. That's how I was finalized for the film."

Scaling Up: From Television to Cinema

Singh, known for his high-budget television projects like the ₹200 crore 'Mahabharat' series, emphasized his comfort with grand scale productions. "All my television projects so far have been high-budget. 'Mahabharat' was made with ₹200 crores. Films are not new to me; I have previously produced English films with international companies. Whether I work for television or cinema, I approach it with the same mindset."

He praised the collaborative spirit on the sets of 'Kannappa': "Everyone worked wonderfully on 'Kannappa.' Their dedication made my job very easy. Working with Akshay Sir, Mohanlal Sir, Prabhas Sir, Mohan Babu Garu, Vishnu Garu, Brahmanandam Garu, it was an unforgettable experience. Mohan Babu Garu, even at this age, worked with immense passion. As a producer, he was one way, but as an actor, he was completely different."

Historical Accuracy and Vishnu Manchu's Portrayal

Singh revealed his meticulous preparation: "I watched all the previous films made on 'Kannappa'—Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi versions. I observed everything. I wanted to do justice to the story, just as they did. Vishnu Garu has done 100% justice to the role of Kannappa. The last hour of the film is going to be amazing."

"Our art director did a lot of research, visiting many museums. We conducted extensive research on weapons and costumes. We tried hard to recreate the 2nd-century atmosphere on screen. That's why we went to New Zealand for filming," he explained, adding, "Although we initially planned to shoot only for 20 days, we ended up filming most of the movie there. Budget was never a constraint; Vishnu ensured we had everything needed."

Impactful Characters and Censor Board Insights

Regarding the star-studded cast, Singh assured, "Prabhas's role is very powerful. No character in this film is just a filler; all roles will definitely impact the audience. No fan will be disappointed after watching this movie. We have shown this film to many people so far, and everyone has praised it as amazing."

Addressing the 13 censor cuts, he clarified: "The cuts were suggested so the film could receive a U or U/A certification. It has some intense action sequences. We aimed for a U13 or U rating, so we made the necessary changes."

Singh also discussed the balance between historical fact and cinematic liberty: "Previous films on Kannappa also took liberties. In this film too, there's some fictional part. We showed the entire narrative interlinked from the first scene to the last. We screened the film for the priests of Srikalahasti, who are the most authentic voices to evaluate it. They praised it immensely, saying it was wonderful, and even asked when the second part would be released. That validation was priceless."

He emphasized the film's nature: "Kannappa is not mythology; it is our history. If an incident happens, everyone narrates it differently. Kannappa existed, but no one knows exactly. Kannappa offered his eye to Lord Shiva. This is all our history."

Future Endeavors and Industry Reflections

When asked about a 'Mahabharata' film next, Singh confirmed his intention: "Yes, I am planning to make 'Mahabharata' as a film. 'Mahabharata' is public property; anyone can take it. Rajamouli Garu can take it. Aamir Khan Garu can take it. It's a subject in the public domain." He also expressed profound respect for S.S. Rajamouli: "After Satyajit Ray, it is Rajamouli who has truly elevated Indian cinema on the global stage."

On the use of graphics in modern cinema, he advised, "Graphics are evolving fast, but they must be used wisely. Today, people often over-rely on VFX. The key is to mix reality with graphics—to enhance, not replace, the real experience."

Finally, on Mohan Babu's character in the film, Singh stated, "Mohan Babu Garu plays a role that's unlike anything seen before in other versions of 'Kannappa.' He’s a phenomenal actor. His range and intensity will be a treat for audiences."
