"A Musical Revolution in Cinema": Music Director Ramanujan on the Soulful Journey of Carmeni Selvam
The upcoming bilingual family drama Carmeni Selvam is making waves not just for its storytelling, but for its groundbreaking approach to film music. Produced by Arun Rangarajulu under the Pathway Productions banner and directed by Ram Chakri, the film stars versatile actor Samuthirakani alongside Gautham Vasudev Menon.
As the film gears up for its grand theatrical release on April 3, 2026, via PVR Inox Pictures, music director Ramanujan MK shared insights into his unique "Music as a Service" (MaaS) model and the emotional depth of the film’s soundtrack.
Breaking the "Solo Composer" Norm
Ramanujan has introduced a corporate structure to film scoring through his Bengaluru-based firm, Musicloud Studio & Technology. Instead of a single individual taking credit, the music is attributed to the collective organization.
Key highlights of this new model include:
-
Revenue Sharing: A unique royalty model where sound engineers, instrumentalists, and programmers all receive a share of the revenue.
-
Cost Efficiency: By streamlining music production, the firm helps producers reduce overall construction costs without compromising on quality.
-
Collaborative Effort: Ramanujan emphasizes that music is a team sport, involving a core group of 4-5 specialists working in sync.
The Emotional Core of Carmeni Selvam
The soundtrack features four songs and an original background score (OST) designed to mirror the film's deep familial ties.
"Director Ram Chakri has been a turning point in my life. For Carmeni Selvam, we wanted the music to be the heartbeat of the story. For the song 'Arere,' which depicts the bond between a father and son, we chose to use the Sarangi instead of the traditional violin or flute. The result was a much stronger emotional resonance that has already touched the hearts of the Telugu audience."
Ramanujan expressed his gratitude to Samuthirakani and Gautham Vasudev Menon for granting him complete creative freedom. He also lauded producer Arun Rangarajulu for his unwavering support and simple, encouraging nature.
Future Aspirations
Inspired by Telugu feel-good classics like Happy Days, Anand, and Godavari, Ramanujan aims to contribute to at least ten meaningful films. "I don't compare myself to others," he stated. "My goal is simply for my music to live in the hearts of the audience long after my name is forgotten."
