Recently, Kollywood comedy actor Yogi Babu visited a temple in Tamil Nadu's Siruvapuri. On the occasion, he was clicked interacting with the temple's priest. Several sections of the media claimed that the priest didn't wish to shake his hands with the popular artist when the latter extended his hand. This gave rise to the allegations that the priest didn't touch Yogi Babu because the latter is from a 'lower' caste.
If some arguments and facts are anything to go by, no untouchability was practiced by the priest. "Yogi Babu clarified nothing of the sort happened. The picture is from his pilgrimage a month back and he has lunch at a priest's home in Tiruchendur whenever he visits. The poor priest and Yogi Babu were both put to discomfort (by the controversy)," wrote Suren, a Twitter user.
A few Netizens opined that it doesn't tantamount to untouchability even if the priest didn't touch Yogi Babu. "When I do 'shradham' (a ritual in Hinduism), I am not allowed to touch not only another person but even unwashed cloth. Even as a child, my dad would slipper me if I ever touched him or my mother on such occasions," wrote a Netizen. "Any Hindu will know that those who serve the deity cannot touch another person till their daily service to the deity is done. It is not caste-specific," wrote Parallel Planes.
