In January, the BBC aired a controversial documentary named 'India: The Modi Question'. An NGO based in Gujarat moved the Delhi High Court with the intention of suing the British public broadcaster for Rs 10,000 Cr for "causing the loss of reputation and goodwill to Prime Minister Narendra Modi". The documentary allegedly talked about the BJP leader's communalist agenda by projecting the 2002 Gujarat riots as a manifestation of his ideology.
The NGO's name is Justice On Trial. As per the body, the documentary defames not only the PM but also the people of India and its judiciary.
The plea wouldn't have acquired any importance but for Harish Salve, one of the most illustrious legal luminaries of contemporary India. Salve has been batting for the Modi government for the past few years.
The documentary has been banned in India. How has the BBC itself reported the issue? So far, it has published only one report in which it said that it is aware of the proceedings. However, the media house deems it inappropriate to comment further at this stage.
