Narendra Modi on Wednesday, addressing a gathering at the inauguration of Delhi's revamped Pragati Maidan, said that India will be the top third economy in the world in his third term. By saying so, he told the Opposition that he will retain power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. "It's my guarantee that India will reach the Top 3 place in the world," the Prime Minister said.
The speech has become a blasting talking point among BJP supporters. The BJP is pretty confident that NDA will secure a third term, scripting political history of sorts. "Modi has spoken like a boss at a time when the Opposition is mooting a No-Confidence Motion in Parliament," BJP's online supporters are saying.
Keeping the politics aside, is Modi's guarantee viable? Yes is the short answer. Columnist Gokul Sahni wrote, "A safe bet to make, regardless of who will be India’s prime minister from 2024 to 2029. As per IMF’s 2023 nominal GDP numbers, India is at $3.74 trillion, closing in on Japan at $4.41 trillion and Germany at $4.31 trillion." Research scholar Monika Verma wrote, "Germany is $4 trillion, Japan is $4.2 Trillion. The moment India crosses the $5 trillion mark, it will be the third largest economy in the world. Most likely by 2027-28. So, Modi's guarantee is doable."
