Union Minister Savitri Thakur was recently made the Minister of State for Women and Child Development by Narendra Modi. She has embarrassed herself by failing to spell the slogan 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' in Hindi during a visit to a school in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress party is criticizing her illiteracy.
The incompetence begs the question: Will Savitri Thakur be able to comprehend complex information mentioned in government files and reports? "The bureaucrats in her ministry will have a great time! All decisions will be on verbal approval, no file will be read. Not knowing English is OK but being unable to write Hindi is sad," wrote Maj Gen Dr. Yash Mor.
It is held by many voters that India should require a certain level of education for candidates. "With the world changing, caste-based politics and selecting ministers based on caste should end. Merit, not caste, should determine eligibility for ministerial positions," wrote Danny on X.
Ministers are not mandated to possess academic qualifications. That said, it would reflect well on a government if intelligent, well-read people are given Ministries. Otherwise, the parties will only alienate the voters.
