PM Modi in damage control mode: Anti-paper leak law notified

The Narendra Modi government has been under attack over the recent NEET paper leak scam. The NTA has, just in the past couple of days, cancelled two other entrance exams.

In the wake of suspicions that a gigantic scam has been pulled off by bureaucrats, the Centre has now notified a stringent anti-paper leak law. Under the law, a fine of Rs 1 Cr and a jail term of up to 10 years will be handed out to offenders.

The law is formally known as the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. This will cover all examinations for central recruitment and entrance into central educational institutions. It came into effect on Friday (June 21).

The law was first passed in February. It has been notified now.

The BJP government at the Centre is approaching the issue with urgency because it fears that anti-incumbency will take root among the urban youths if this rot is not nipped in the bud. One of the reasons the BJP fell behind in Uttar Pradesh in the recent Lok Sabha elections is that two paper leak incidents angered the UP youth.
