After 55 people die, Kamal Haasan blames victims

The toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu rose to nearly 55 yesterday. MNM party chief and actor Kamal Haasan has broken his silence on the issue. Shockingly, he has blamed the victims.

The 'Indian 2' actor on Sunday said that excessive drinking is the problem. He blamed the victims for their "carelessness".

Like a family elder, he said, "They have to take care of their health."

He then prescribed a policy measure. "My request to the government would be to create psychiatric centres which will counsel them. It has to be occasional drinking, social drinking if at all. But they must understand that exceeding limit in any form be it sugar or anything is bad," ANI quoted him as saying.

Kamal has been accused of toeing the DMK line. Since it is MK Stalin who is the Chief Minister, he has dared not criticize him.

Expectedly, the BJP has criticized him. "Kamal Haasan is actually blaming the victims of Hooch tragedy instead of holding the MK Stalin Govt responsible for the illicit liquor, which is freely available in TN. One has to be depraved to make such an outrageous comment. But then what can one expect from I.N.D.I Alliance?" wrote Amit Malviya.
