Modi in Mahbubnagar makes two big promises

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today in Telangana's Mahbubnagar to kick off BJP's Assembly election campaign in style. Addressing an enthusiastic crowd, the PM said that a National Turmeric Board will be set up in Nizamabad. Besides, a Tribal Central University will be set up in Mulugu. The latter will be done at a cost of Rs 900 Cr.

The PM described India as a major producer, prime consumer and exporter of Turmeric. He added that the farmers of Telangana produce turmeric in a prominent way. "After COVID-19, awareness about turmeric has increased and global demand has also increased. Looking at the necessity of Turmeric farmers and future opportunities, the centre has decided to establish a National Turmeric Board," the PM said.

He added that Rs 13,500 Cr has been allocated for Telangana towards development across spheres.

The Turmeric Board promise has been directed at materializing and streamlining the value chain of turmeric production, marketing and distribution.

The two promises are headline-grabbing. The TRS is likely to up the ante in order to manage the narrative. Politically speaking, the BJP doesn't seem to be a direct threat to the BRS in the Assembly elections. The ruling BRS is poised to secure a third term.
