A video clip in which hundreds of job-seekers are seen jostling for space outside a venue where walk-in interviews were being held, has gone viral on the Internet. The clip is undated.
On Twitter, a handle shared the video with the caption, "Situation of walk-in interviews in India. This is in Hyderabad." The tweet has so far garnered more than 1.5 million impressions.
The situation, as evidenced by the teeming crowd, is stunning. To put it mildly, youngsters are desperate for well-paying jobs in the services sector. In cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai, lakhs of qualified Engineers are arriving every year with hopes and only a small percentage of them are able to land their dream jobs. "Two weeks back, a leading pharma company in Visakhapatnam conducted walk-ins for various positions exclusively for women. That day, three banquet halls were packed," a Twitter user wrote.
The problem of supply glut is there for all to see. "As India with its huge population inches closer to 100% literacy, this is bound to happen. The number of job seekers goes up and businessmen go down. Entrepreneurship and self-employment are the future. Degrees help when the literacy rate is low. Degrees are pieces of paper when everyone has them," wrote a Twitter user, commenting on the video.
