It makes no sense to beat around the bush. The party is over. 'Adipurush' is a flop. On Monday, box office collections across India were a huge disappointment. As long as the weekend lasted, the film seemed to be thriving. Once it was Monday, it was over. The makers have claimed that one crore people watched the movie in the first three days. It is likely that only a fraction of it will catch the Prabhas-starrer for the rest of the movie's theatrical lifetime.
What lessons can the industry learn from the disastrous streak of the epic movie? There is a big positive.
People are ready to bet big on spectacle movies even if the teaser/trailer is not great. 'Adipurush' witnessed a huge backlash right after Friday's early shows. Yet, the film sustained itself gloriously on Saturday and Sunday. Big spectacle movies have a minimum worth, it would seem from the experience.
Last year, 'Brahmastra', too, was a cost failure. Had its budget not been astronomical, it would have made profits for all distributors despite negative feedback from the audience. People want rare themes in movies. Rare themes and settings can make the audience overlook loopholes to a large extent.
If producers can plan the budget of their big-budget spectacle movies well, they can minimize losses even if the big film is a big bore. That's the lesson from 'Adipurush', which ran superbly on the first weekend despite troll-worthy content.
