Looks like Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is coming up with yet another unconventional initiative after the 'Odd-Even' formula to control air pollution. This time, gender-specific parks are in the offing.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be setting up at least 250 parks meant exclusively for women in Delhi. The parks will be called Pink Parks. Men won't be allowed entry into the parks. Already a park has been operating about the AAP supremo is satisfied.
These parks will also offer gym facilities. For security, CCTV cameras will be put up. Basic amenities such as toilets will also be ensured.
Some netizens are criticizing the move. "This is exclusionary. Public spaces shouldn't be barred from use for a whole gender. This sort of discrimination can be challenged in the court," a commentator said.
In the past, a bar on the entry of women into the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala was legally challenged. At that time, it was argued that gender-based discrimination is unconstitutional. Will a similar logic be used now in the case of a secular space like parks?
