The issue of privatizing the Visakha Steel Plant has stirred up a lot of controversy among the ruling party leaders in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. During his recent visit to Visakhapatnam, Union Minister of State for Steel, Faggan Singh, added to the confusion with his contradictory statements.
Speaking in the morning at Visakhapatnam Stadium, he stated that there are no current plans to sell the Visakha Steel Plant to the Central Government. He further revealed that the factory would be strengthened in the near future, as they are currently facing challenges related to sourcing raw materials. This announcement was well received, and many were relieved that the Center had taken a step back on privatization.
However, later in the evening, during a meeting with local politicians and union leaders, Faggan Singh changed his tune. He announced that the Central Cabinet had already decided on the privatization of Visakhapatnam Steel and that the company was already listed for sale. He made it clear that everyone should work towards saving the company from its current losses and that he was not solely responsible for this decision.
This sudden change of stance has caused a lot of confusion and frustration among the stakeholders. T. Harish Rao, Telangana Minister, credited KCR's influence for the Center's reversal on the issue. YCP MLA Perni Nani countered their claims, while Jana Sena's Pawan Kalyan revealed that he had urged BJP leaders not to privatize the steel plant during his visit to Delhi.
Despite the varying opinions of political leaders, the labor unions at Visakha Steel Plant expressed their relief that there would be no privatization. However, Faggan Singh's contradicting statements have caused further anxiety and uncertainty among them.
