On Saturday, Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray faction MP Sanjay Raut was quoted as saying by a news agency that his leader believes that the 2024 General Elections will be the last parliamentary elections in the country if there is no power change. The former Maharashtra CM made the comments about the so-called impending dictatorship at Friday's 15-party meet in Patna.
It is believed that other Opposition party leaders, especially Mamata Banerjee, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav, are going to popularize the scaremongering myth that Narendra Modi and BJP intend to suspend elections in the country after next year's Lok Sabha elections.
The propaganda is so immature that it is the biggest joke ever cracked by the Opposition camp. If Modi wanted to be a dictator, he would have suspended elections before the 2019 elections. He would have suspended elections during the pandemic when the economic situation in the country was hopeless due to lockdowns.
Modi can impose an Emergency even now instead of going to the polls next year and risking losing power. If Modi hasn't killed democracy in nine years, it is vile to propagate that he is a dictator-in-waiting. Dictators don't wait for a defeat to impose a dictatorship.
So far, BJP hasn't tinkered with the Constitution to even postpone elections in politically tougher States like Karnataka. The Opposition camp knows that BJP has no intentions to ban elections. Some parties simply want to erase faith in India's democracy by resorting to propaganda.
