During his address to the US Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made gaffes while speaking in English. He used the word 'investigating the girl child' when he meant to use the word 'investing'. Moments later, he added that his government has laid nearly 400,000 miles of political fibre when he clearly meant to say 'optical fibre'. He mispronounced 'relationship' as 'relationssippi'.
The Congress party is making a hullabaloo out of the PM's gaffes. Supriya Shrinate of the Grand Old Party mocked Modi's poor English-language skills that were on display.
As a counter, BJP supporters are reminding the Congress party that an individual doesn't become intelligent if he knows perfect English. "Modi's mother tongue is Gujarati. He is very proficient in Hindi. He knows good enough English as well. Sonia Gandhi doesn't know perfect English either. The BJP never made fun of her English-language skills," a Twitter user wrote.
A political and cultural fight has broken out on social media, with many saying that mocking someone's poor English betrays a colonized and classist mindset rather than a liberated mindset.
