On Sunday, a particular news item trended across India. The Bank of Baroda happened to issue an e-auction notice against Sunny Deol, who has been in the news over the stupendous success of the Hindi movie 'Gadar 2'. Since he is also a BJP MP, the news acquired all the more prominence. It was reported that Deol had failed to pay dues worth Rs 55 Cr. That's why his residence in Mumbai was up for auction by the Bank.
In a shocking twist, on Monday, news emerged that the Bank withdrew the auction notice citing a technical glitch. Predictably, this is giving rise to political controversy, considering that Deol is a BJP MP.
"Yesterday afternoon the nation got to know that Bank of Baroda had put up the Juhu residence of BJP MP Sunny Deol for e-auction since he has not paid up Rs 56 crore owed to the Bank. This morning, in less than 24 hours, the nation has got to know that the Bank of Baroda has withdrawn the auction notice due to 'technical reasons'. Wonder who triggered these 'technical reasons'?" tweeted former Union Minister and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, insinuating that the BJP government is trying to save its MP.
In the past, electricity bills, GST notices et al have been withdrawn citing technical glitches. But a high-profile e-auction notice being withdrawn by a bank is unheard of. The Opposition is likely to make this a major issue.
