Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today assured on the floor of Parliament that a full-fledged caste census is a must and that it will surely be done by the Congress-led UPA government in the future if the current government doesn't. He said that only the caste census can give an accurate view of the number of people belonging to OBC, SC and ST communities in India. He asked the Narendra Modi government to do the caste census at the earliest. "If you are not doing it, we will do it," he added.
"We need to only how many OBCs, Dalits and Adivasis are living in the country. Do pass the Women's Reservation Bill right away. There is no requirement for the Delimitation process and the population census to be completed for the provisions of the Bill to come into effect," the Wayanad MP said.
A caste census will be discouraged by the BJP government because it will antagonize its General Category vote base. That's why the party has been skirting the issue skilfully. And this is something the Congress party and a lot of caste-based parties like SP and RJD don't want to continue.
