Telangana Home Minister Mahmood Ali has advised women not to dress up like Europeans. As per the Minister, women are supposed to wear traditional clothes.
"You can wear whatever they want to but don't dress like Europeans," the Minister has been quoted as saying. "Women wearing fewer (sic) clothes creates issues. It would be good if they wear more clothes (by which the Minister means longer clothes). Dressing traditionally would gain respect for an individual," he told the media in a video that is going viral on the Internet.
The BRS leader's remarks are going to be quoted widely by the national media as well.
In the past, politicians from different parties have made similar remarks, offending women. When instances of sexual assault or molestation grab headlines, politicians chip in with pieces of unwarranted advice on how women should dress in public. Women's rights groups, feminists, civil rights groups and the media have called out people in responsible positions for making misogynistic comments that blame women for crimes against them.
