Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Muslim quotas in Telangana are unconstitutional. He reiterated the same in Karnataka's Hunagunda on Sunday. In his speech, the BJP leader said that his party will not only disallow religion-based quotas but will also ensure that the proportion of quotas enjoyed by Lingayats will never be brought down by the BJP government. This is a direct attempt to woo the large Lingayat vote bank in Karnataka.
In his speech, Shah asserted that the BJP government has strengthened national security by clamping a ban on the Popular Front of India, a Muslim outfit accused of radical activities and thinking. Shah accused the Congress party of standing up against the ban.
He then added, "BJP will neither allow Muslim reservations. It will also not allow Lingayat reservations to be reduced in Karnataka."
The speech assumes importance with the Congress party recently promising that it will bring in a 6% Muslim quota in the Kannada State should it win a popular mandate in the upcoming Assembly election.
